Graham's number

bestofwikipedia:

Graham’s number, named after Ronald Graham, is a large number that is an upper bound on the solution to a certain problem in Ramsey theory. Graham’s number is unimaginably larger than other well-known large numbers such as a googol, googolplex, and even larger than Skewes’ number and Moser’s number. Indeed, the observable universe is far too small to contain an ordinary digital representation of Graham’s number, assuming that each digit occupies at least one Planck volume. (via Rob Strong)

Big then ?

My moan to #Nxea

Dear NXEA, on your web page you state that:

Icicles are forming under bridges and making contact with the overhead power lines causing them to trip out, and compacted snow is building up in the doors and undercarriages of our trains causing some equipment to freeze up.

As an excuse for the poor service we have seen this week, including trains cancelled at short notice, 12 carriage trains running as 4 carriages and delays where they do run.

I would be grateful if you could provide some evidence of this (Eg photographic), as there has been no snow in the NXEA area that I am aware of for at least 4 days. Also, average daytime temperatures have been above freezing, causing a thaw in large parts of the district. The last time I saw an ice / snow build up on the doors of a train was the week before last. I find it hard that you are happy to justify such a poor service to your customers on such grounds.

As you state that you have engineers out clearing these thaw impervious icicles, it should not be too much for one of them to have a camera phone or similar.

As for the ice/ snow build up, I am happy to provide photographic evidence that this is not the case in the trains that I am forced to use.

The Wikileaks scandal is more than just a diplomatic scuffle; it’s a war for the future of the Internet

infoneer-pulse:

You’ll have been following the Wikileaks saga, of course, because it is novel and interesting. Maybe you like it because it looks like a live action retelling of Enemy Of The State, or because history seems to be in the making. It feels big, doesn’t it? It is, but it’s bigger than that, too: what we’re witnessing right now is the opening of hostilities in the first big infowar. The war for the Internet is very big indeed.

If you’re not a digital native, or if you’re some kind of hearty outdoors type, this may not seem important, but you’re dead wrong. We could be spectators for the start of the cyber Great War – and they’ve just knocked over Franz Ferdinand.

Yes, in a beautiful collision of cuddly adorableness and PR mastermindery, Mozilla has adopted two baby firefoxes. These cuties (which are actually pandas — not foxes) were born at Knoxville Zoo, Tennessee, back in June, but as of today they’re now part of the Mozilla community.
